Having a portrait created is a unique experience. Snapping a photograph can capture a moment, but a painting reflects the human experience; it brings forth the essence and authentic personality of the subject. It’s an original work of art. It’s a way to honor and cherish someone and hold them dear.

In my work as a portrait artist, I have come to realize that the true understanding of another human can only happen if i take the time to let them be themselves while i’m casually gathering material. Often I spend the majority of my time in our initial photo session talking and getting to know the entire family. Some people find the camera to be very intimidating and they stiffen and act out of character or maybe even try to hide a bit. I take as much time as needed to get everyone to relax and be themselves.

Back in my studio, I pour over the photographs for days, looking for the right images that speak to the subject. Through careful consideration and observation, I develop a concept that I take to the client before starting the painting. I believe in making this a collaborative experience, deciding together with the client on the perfect reference image and concept. Once everything is in place, I go to work.

Taking plenty of time to warm up.

Over the course of my career, I’ve had kids hide behind curtains, have to be bribed with birthday cake, I’ve been photobombed by a donkey… Though I have worked with photos the client supplies, Its a bit harder for me to capture the true essence of the person unless I can be around them have a chance to tune into their energy and personality.
